Have you written a story or part of one?

It could be anything! Flash fiction, a collection of short stories, poetry, an entire novel, something other writers haven't invented yet. You're looking for people who can give you feedback, provide answers to any questions you might have, and support you on your journey from the blank page to the bestseller.

BetaReadersKids is a platform created by kids, for kids. Our mission is to connect every young aspiring author to beta readers. The members of our community are the same people who might pick up a book with your name on it sooner than you think. If you're a young author (or author-to-be), and if your work was written for a child audience, then you've come to the right place.

Our website is for writers and beta readers from elementary school through high school. We accept work from writers at any level, whether you've taken a class or just started out. You can read submitted stories without an account, but if you're interested in beta reading for somebody or want to submit your own work and get feedback on it, sign up (it's completely free).

But what is beta reading?

A beta reader is somebody who will read your unfinished, imperfect work and provide constructive criticism to make your story better. It's an extremely important part in the idea → manuscript → publication chain. Beta readers provide you with fresh insight to your story, catch things you've missed while developing plot and characters, and give you new ideas. Their feedback can also allow you to get a better idea of how your book will be received by your target audience.

Beta reading for someone else is equally fun! You get a sneak peek at their work, and by analyzing it closely, you might learn how to become a more successful writer in your own projects.

What about writing?

If you need some advice on how to get started on your story, are facing writer's block, or want some tips on writing in general, check out our writing advice page. It was developed by published child authors to help you complete a great story from start to finish.

If you already have something written, submit it to our website and get feedback!

Why is this website for kids?

We've found a lot of beta reading platforms out there, but most are primarily for adults, so we thought we would create one for kids. This brings us to the question: Why not just use an existing platform made for adults?

When was the last time you saw an adult reading your favorite YA adventure novel? It doesn't happen very often. If you're a child author, an adult would probably give very different feedback on your work than a kid would. We believe that it's crucial to get feedback directly from your target audience.

For example, when reading a story we wrote, adults couldn't understand the main character's feelings about a breakup, but kids closely related to it. Or, when reading an adventure story, adults couldn't understand how a character's actions really worked out, while kids hung onto every (slightly unrealistic) detail.

If your audience is anywhere in grade school, then why get adult feedback on your work? What you're really looking for is how your book will be received by kids. Since your book was written for a child audience, kids are the people who will beg you for the sequel to the sequel.

Why was this website created?

We created this website because we had a shortage of (you guessed it) beta readers. Our friends were happy to read our writing, but there were only so many people we could ask, and only a few ended up reading (much less giving feedback). It was also too hard to convince enough adults to read our work. Because most of it was written for tweens and teens, few grownups were particularly interested in reading it. Then, we had an idea: We would go straight to our target audience and ask THEM how we could make our stories better. No book gets off the ground without a little help, so we created a safe place for kids to get the feedback they need to make their stories better, and eventually publication-ready.
