sleepless
Darkness fills my room; the clock just struck one o'clock.
Curtains drawn, door shut tight. Windows closed, duvet thrown.
Yet sleep beguiles me; it flits just ahead of me.
Chase it I try, yet it’s always ahead of me.
Sleep, the brat, teases me. Never too close, always ahead of me.
Chase it I try, poems, even math! Yet all fails.
Chase it I try, yet the darkness is still so bright!
Now that I’m done, the clock struck thirty after two.
So I think, “Maybe just close my eyes. Sleep will come.”
Sleep encroached! Held my hand! Before it ran away from me.
Sleep! Cruel, eternal, sadistic tormentor filth!
It’s a perverted god. Turned on by suffering.
My mind is worn. It is tired. “Sleep!” I beg, “Come soon!”
“Why so cruel? When can I finally sleep in peace?”
To the void I roared frustration, “Sleep… that tyrant!”
